Terms & conditions
Effective 11 October 2026
1. Acceptance of these Terms
These Terms & Conditions ("Terms") govern your use of CARIBOU, a commercial-vehicle (HGV) navigation app provided by the CARIBOU team ("we", "us", "our"). By tapping "I Understand and Agree" or otherwise using the app, you accept these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the app.
These Terms cover the closed beta and will be updated with a registered legal entity and dedicated contact details before any public release.
2. What CARIBOU Is — and Is Not
CARIBOU provides HGV-aware route planning and turn-by-turn navigation, taking into account vehicle dimensions and weight where road data allows.
CARIBOU is a driving aid, not a substitute for road signs, physical height and weight restriction barriers, or your own judgement. Routing, speed-limit, and clearance-risk data is drawn from third-party map providers and community reports and may be incomplete, outdated, or wrong. You remain solely and legally responsible for complying with all road signs, height/weight restrictions, traffic laws, and your vehicle's actual dimensions at all times, regardless of what the app displays.
Never interact with the app in a way that takes your attention off the road while driving. The app locks configuration screens while the vehicle is detected as moving; this is a safety aid, not a substitute for your own judgement about when it is safe to interact with a device.
3. Accounts
You can use CARIBOU as a guest (an anonymous account tied to your device) or sign in with an email/password, Apple, or Google account. Signing up from a guest session upgrades that same account rather than starting a new one, so your existing reports, trips and rank carry over.
You are responsible for keeping your sign-in credentials secure and for all activity under your account. Do not share your account with others.
4. Subscriptions & Free Trial
CARIBOU may offer a free trial period followed by a paid subscription for full commercial routing features. Where subscriptions are enabled, payments are processed securely by the Apple App Store or Google Play — we do not directly collect or store your payment card details.
Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled. You can view, manage, or cancel your subscription at any time in your device's App Store / Google Play account settings. Refunds are subject to the relevant store's own refund policy, not ours.
5. Community Content
CARIBOU lets drivers submit hazard reports (e.g. low bridges, road closures), share live trips via a code, and appear on a leaderboard under a display name. Community-submitted data is not independently verified before display and may be inaccurate, out of date, or removed without notice — do not rely on it as your sole source of safety information.
You must not submit false, abusive, defamatory, or unlawful content. We may remove content or suspend accounts that misuse these features.
A live-shared trip is visible to anyone who has the share code for the duration of the share; leaderboard display names, stats, and any uploaded profile photo are visible to other users of the app.
Ghost Mode is on by default, so other drivers can't see you. If you turn it off, then while you are actively navigating your approximate position is shown to other nearby CARIBOU drivers, and theirs to you — this stops the moment you stop navigating. Turn Ghost Mode back on in Settings at any time to hide your own position; you can still see everyone else.
6. Acceptable Use
You agree not to: reverse-engineer or misuse the app beyond normal use; attempt to disrupt or overload our backend services; use the app for any unlawful purpose; or submit content that infringes someone else's rights.
7. Third-Party Services
CARIBOU relies on third-party services to function, including TomTom (mapping, routing, search, traffic and speed-camera data), Supabase (backend database, authentication, and file storage), and, where enabled, RevenueCat (subscription billing) and music-streaming providers (Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music) for in-app playback controls. Your use of those integrations is also subject to each provider's own terms and privacy practices, which we do not control.
8. Disclaimers & Limitation of Liability
CARIBOU is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including as to accuracy, reliability, or fitness for a particular purpose.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the CARIBOU team is not liable for any loss, damage, fines, vehicle damage, or injury arising from your use of the app, including reliance on routing, speed-limit, or clearance-risk information, or from bridge strikes, route deviations, or other incidents. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
9. Termination
You may stop using CARIBOU and delete your data at any time via Settings → Privacy → Delete my account and data. We may suspend or terminate access for accounts that violate these Terms.
10. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time, particularly as the app moves from closed testing toward public release. Continued use after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
11. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
12. Contact
Questions about these Terms can be sent via the in-app feedback screen (Me → Help & legal → Send feedback).
